You read that right – apart from making lemonade, you can use lemons to clean your home. And that makes them one of the most awesome fruits ever. Apart from being an inseparable part of many dishes, lemons also serve to boost your home cleaning routine in ways you never imagined. You can use them as mild disinfectants and scrubbers.
When cleaning time rolls around, bust out the lemons and get to it.
- Cleaning the microwave – is your microwave greasy and messy? No doubt that is the case if you use it extensively and often perform cooking experiments to no positive outcome. Fear not, because lemons make it easy to clean this appliance. Just fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and place it in the oven. Slice a lemon in half, toss it in the microwave and run it on high setting for about 2-3 minutes. Once it is done, don’t open the door for a few minutes. After that remove the bowl and wipe the interior. You will find any splatters and grease very easy to remove, as the lemon serves to soften these through the steam released inside. It is super effective and eco-friendly.
- Sanitise wooden cutting boards – wooden cutting boards often get quite messy. As a matter of fact, you can contaminate them dangerously by cutting raw meat on them. With a little salt and half a lemon, you can quickly disinfect them after use. Scour the surface of the board and rinse – you will find it is as good as new.
- Deodorise your fridge – freshly-squeezed lemon juice or a lemon cut in half is all you need to deodorise your fridge. Just rub the interior (if the fridge is off and empty), or leave a bowl of lemon juice inside. You will be met with a refreshing scent the next time you open the door.
- Cleaning a blender – cleaning the blender is a much-needed task since the machine gets quite scummy after a while. Cleaning it with lemons is quite effective. Simply fill half of the capacity with warm water, add a drop of dishwashing liquid and a lemon chopped in coarse pieces. Run it for a minute and behold how sparkling clean it is afterwards.
- Cleaning and refreshing plastic containers – if you want to eradicate the smell and stains of your lunch from a plastic container, you need only clean it with lemon juice or by rubbing half a lemon over it. That will do it nicely.
- Turn peels into a cleaner – even lemon peels can be used to aid your cleaning routine. Instead of throwing the peels away, put them in a jar. Add vinegar to the brim and let it sit in a dark place for two weeks. Strain the cleaner with a fine sieve and discard the peels. You now have an effective all-purpose cleaner ready for use at any time.
As you can see, lemons are quite useful in so many ways. You will do well to use them to boost your home cleaning expertise.
